Twelve Flavours of Sky

The zodiac is a 360° band circling the sky, divided into twelve equal signs, or rashis, of 30° each. Each sign belongs to one of four elements, repeating three times around the zodiac. Fire signs (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) are traditionally read as driven and expressive. Earth signs (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) are read as practical and grounded. Air signs (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) are read as social and idea-oriented. Every Sign Has a Lord

Each rashi is ruled by one graha, called its lord or rashi swami. Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn each rule two signs; the Sun and Moon, being the fastest and most central to daily life, each rule only one. Rahu and Ketu, the lunar nodes, rule no sign in classical assignment. Sign lordship is the backbone of chart reading: a graha's own strength is judged partly by how well it sits in its own sign, and a house's affairs are read partly through wherever that house's lord happens to sit — a fuller subject covered in its own lesson on house lordship.

One Sign Is Not 'Your Sign'

It is tempting to reduce a whole chart down to a single sign, the way pop culture often does with a Sun sign. Vedic astrology does not work that way. Your Ascendant has its own sign. Your Moon has its own sign. Your Sun has its own sign. Every one of the nine grahas sits in a sign of its own, independently, and each carries its own nakshatra and pada as well. A complete reading treats all of these as separate facts to be read together, not collapsed into one label.

Signs vs. Houses: Wallpaper, Not Rooms

Signs and houses are easy to conflate but describe two different things. A house is a fixed area of life — career, home, partnership — that exists in the same order in every chart. A sign is the 30° segment of the zodiac that happens to fall in that house, or that a graha happens to occupy, and it colours the flavour of whatever it touches. The same 10th house of career looks quite different coloured by disciplined Capricorn than it does coloured by expressive Leo, even though the house's core theme, career, stays identical in both charts.
