Drishti: How Planetary Aspects Work in Vedic Astrology

How a graha's influence reaches houses it does not even sit in.

5 min read · Updated 14 Sept 2026

The short answer

Drishti means 'gaze' — a graha's influence on houses it looks at, not just the one it occupies. Every graha aspects the 7th house from itself. Mars also aspects the 4th and 8th, Jupiter the 5th and 9th, and Saturn the 3rd and 10th, counted forward from wherever each one sits.

The gaze, not the angle

Drishti means gaze. In Vedic astrology, a graha's influence is not confined to the house it sits in — it also looks outward and touches other houses, the way a person in a room can still watch something happening down the hall. Reading a chart well means tracking both: what a graha does where it sits, and what it does where it looks.

Drishtiaspect — literally 'sight'; a graha's influence on houses it looks at, separate from the house it occupies

Drishti: a graha in the 1st casting its glance. Every graha aspects the 7th from itself; Saturn (shown) also reaches the 3rd and 10th.

The one rule every graha follows

Every single graha, without exception, aspects the 7th house counted from wherever it sits — the position directly opposite it in the chart. A Moon in your 3rd house aspects your 9th. A Venus in your 11th house aspects your 5th. This universal 7th aspect is the baseline; three grahas add extra gazes on top of it.

Three special gazes

A worked example

Say Saturn sits in your 5th house, the house of creativity, learning and children. Count its three aspects forward from there: the 3rd-from-the-5th lands in the 7th house, the 7th-from-the-5th lands in the 11th, and the 10th-from-the-5th lands in the 2nd. So a 5th-house Saturn casts its gaze onto your 7th (partnership), 11th (gains and community) and 2nd (family, speech, resources) — three houses it never sets foot in, but traditionally is read as shaping.

How to count a graha's aspect

  1. Find the house the graha actually occupies — call that position 1 in your count
  2. Count forward, house by house, through the chart
  3. Every graha's 7th count is an aspect — this is the universal one
  4. Mars also counts its 4th and 8th; Jupiter its 5th and 9th; Saturn its 3rd and 10th
  5. Wherever the count passes house 12, continue from house 1 again

A second worked example, to make the pattern automatic

Try Mars in the 3rd house, the house of courage and short journeys. Mars casts three aspects: the 4th-from-the-3rd, the 7th-from-the-3rd, and the 8th-from-the-3rd. Counting the 3rd house itself as position 1, the 4th count lands in the 6th house, the 7th count lands in the 9th house, and the 8th count lands in the 10th house. So a 3rd-house Mars reaches your 6th (daily work, health), your 9th (belief, higher learning) and your 10th (career) — three very different arenas for one graha's gaze to touch.

Why Vedic aspects are not mutual

Notice the asymmetry in the worked example above: Saturn in the 5th aspects the 2nd, but a graha sitting in the 2nd does not automatically aspect the 5th back — unless it happens to be Jupiter, whose 9th-from-the-2nd does land there. Western aspects are angles between two points and are always mutual by definition; a trine is a trine both ways. Vedic drishti is directional, like an actual gaze is: it goes one way unless the geometry happens to send it back.

Where schools differ: drishti and Rahu/Ketu

Whether Rahu and Ketu cast any special aspect at all is a genuine, unresolved disagreement between traditions. Some schools give the nodes a Mars-like gaze onto the 4th, 7th and 8th, reasoning they behave like Mars in other ways; others hold that a shadow with no light of its own cannot cast one, and limit them to no aspect, or the universal 7th only. This app leaves Rahu and Ketu's aspects off the chart by default, which is the more conservative of the two readings, not a claim that the other view is wrong.

Common mistakes with drishti

  • Assuming an aspect is mutual, the way Western trines and squares are — Vedic drishti usually is not
  • Forgetting that every graha aspects its 7th, not only Mars, Jupiter and Saturn
  • Reaching for degrees and orbs — classical drishti is counted in whole houses, not exact angles
  • Giving Rahu and Ketu special aspects by default, when schools genuinely disagree on whether they have any

Cast your free Kundali, find Jupiter, and count three houses forward to its 5th aspect. Tradition reads whatever sits there as receiving some of Jupiter's protection.

Questions people ask

What does drishti mean in Vedic astrology?

Drishti literally means 'sight' or 'gaze.' It describes a graha's influence on houses other than the one it physically occupies — the aspect it casts outward across the chart. Every graha has at least one aspect: the 7th house from wherever it sits.

Do all planets aspect the 7th house?

Yes. The 7th-house aspect, directly opposite a graha's placement, is universal — every one of the nine grahas casts it, with no exceptions. It is the baseline aspect; Mars, Jupiter and Saturn add further special aspects on top of it.

Which planets have special aspects in Vedic astrology?

Mars, Jupiter and Saturn. Mars additionally aspects the 4th and 8th houses from its placement, Jupiter the 5th and 9th, and Saturn the 3rd and 10th. The Sun, Moon, Mercury and Venus keep only the universal 7th-house aspect.

Is a Vedic aspect always mutual, like a Western trine?

No. Western aspects are angles and are mutual by definition. Vedic drishti is directional and counted in houses, so a graha can aspect a house whose occupant does not aspect back — unless the count happens to work both ways, which it sometimes does.

Do Rahu and Ketu have planetary aspects?

This is genuinely disputed. Some schools give the lunar nodes a Mars-style aspect on the 4th, 7th and 8th houses; others say a shadow point with no light cannot cast a gaze at all. This app leaves Rahu and Ketu's aspects off the chart by default.

How do you calculate which houses a planet aspects?

Treat the planet's own house as position 1 and count forward. Every planet's count of 7 is an aspect. Mars adds counts 4 and 8, Jupiter adds 5 and 9, and Saturn adds 3 and 10, wrapping back to house 1 after house 12.

What is the difference between graha drishti and rashi drishti?

Graha drishti, covered in this lesson, is a planet's aspect counted in houses from its placement. Rashi drishti is a separate, sign-based method used mainly in Jaimini astrology, where whole signs aspect each other according to whether they are movable, fixed or dual. This app uses graha drishti only.
