Exalted and Debilitated Planets: Planetary Dignity Explained
The same graha is not equally strong in every sign — dignity says exactly where it stands.
The short answer
Planetary dignity grades how comfortable a graha is in its sign, from strongest to weakest: exalted (uccha), moolatrikona, own sign, friendly/neutral/enemy sign, and debilitated (neecha). Exaltation and debilitation are fixed, opposite signs for each graha — Saturn is exalted in Libra, debilitated in Aries — while the middle grades depend on the sign's ruling graha.
Why the Same Planet Isn't Equally Strong Everywhere

Two charts can both place Saturn in the 10th house and still read very differently, because a graha's condition depends heavily on which sign holds it. This condition is called dignity, and it's one of the first things checked after a graha's house placement — not a replacement for house, aspect, or dasha, but the baseline strength reading that colours all of them.
The Five Grades of Dignity, Strongest to Weakest
- Exalted (uccha) — a graha's single strongest sign, e.g. Saturn in Libra, Jupiter in Cancer, Mars in Capricorn
- Moolatrikona — a specific degree band, usually inside a sign the graha rules, near root strength
- Own sign (svakshetra) — a sign the graha rules outright; comfortable and reliably itself
- Friendly, neutral, or enemy sign — the wide middle ground, graded by classical friendship tables between grahas
- Debilitated (neecha) — the sign directly opposite the graha's exaltation; its least comfortable seat

Exaltation and Debilitation: One Table for All Seven Grahas
Exaltation and debilitation signs are fixed facts, not open to chart-by-chart interpretation — every classical source agrees on them for the seven classical grahas (the Sun through Saturn). Debilitation is always the seventh sign counted from exaltation, i.e. the exact opposite sign.

Own Sign vs Moolatrikona: A Common Point of Confusion
Own sign and moolatrikona are often mixed up, but they're different ideas. Own sign is any sign the graha rules outright — Mars rules both Aries and Scorpio, for instance. Moolatrikona is a narrower degree band, usually carved out of one of those own signs, that classical texts treat as marginally stronger than the rest of the own sign. Mars's moolatrikona, for example, is the first 12° of Aries; the remaining 12°–30° of Aries, and all of Scorpio, are simply own sign.

Friendly, Neutral, and Enemy Signs: the Middle Ground
When a graha is in a sign it neither rules nor is exalted or debilitated in, dignity falls back to natural friendship: a fixed classical table of which grahas get along with which. The relevant relationship is between the graha itself and the lord of the sign it occupies.

Debilitation Is Not Doom
A debilitated graha is traditionally read as slower-going or less naturally comfortable in its role — not as a curse. A debilitated graha placed in a strong house can still deliver real results, and classical texts describe specific configurations, called neecha bhanga (debilitation cancellation), that are traditionally read as offsetting or reversing the debility over time. Dignity is always the opening assessment of a graha, never the final verdict — house, aspects, and dasha all still matter.
What About Rahu and Ketu?
Rahu and Ketu, the lunar nodes, don't get a dignity rating the way the seven classical grahas do, because classical texts disagree on their exaltation and debilitation signs — common proposals put Rahu's exaltation in Taurus or Gemini and Ketu's in Scorpio or Sagittarius, with no single agreed answer. Astra follows the more conservative reading: rather than assign a disputed dignity, it reads the nodes through the lord of the sign they occupy, and through whichever graha shares that sign with them.

- Treating debilitation as an automatic bad outcome, ignoring house placement, aspects, and possible neecha bhanga

- Assuming exaltation guarantees ease in every area of life, when it only describes the graha's own comfort, not the house it happens to occupy
- Assigning Rahu or Ketu a fixed exaltation sign as if it were settled, when classical sources genuinely disagree
