Retrograde and Combust Planets in Vedic Astrology, Explained
One is a trick of vantage point. The other is a trick of glare. Neither is a flaw in you.
The short answer
Retrograde (vakri) means a planet appears to move backward against the stars as seen from Earth, purely due to relative orbital speed — nothing physically reverses. Combust (asta) means a planet sits close enough to the Sun in longitude to be lost in its glare. They are independent conditions: a planet can be one, both, or neither at once.
Two States, Often Confused
Open any transit report and you may see a planet marked both R for retrograde and combust in the same line, and it is easy to assume these describe one thing. They do not. Retrograde is about direction of apparent motion against the stars. Combust is about closeness to the Sun in the sky. A planet can be retrograde and nowhere near the Sun, combust while moving perfectly forward, both together, or neither.
Retrograde (Vakri): An Illusion of Perspective

No planet ever actually reverses course. Every planet, including Earth, orbits the Sun in the same direction. Retrograde motion is a trick of vantage: as Earth, moving faster on an inner orbit, overtakes a slower outer planet like Mars or Saturn, that planet briefly appears to drift backward against the zodiac before resuming forward motion — the same effect as a slower car seeming to slide backward when you overtake it on a highway.

The Sun and Moon are never retrograde — Earth's own motion around the Sun and the Moon's motion around Earth do not produce this backward illusion. Rahu and Ketu, the lunar nodes, are treated as permanently retrograde by convention, since their mean position always regresses through the zodiac over the long run.
What a Retrograde Planet Traditionally Means
Within Vedic tradition a retrograde graha is often read as strengthened but turned inward — its themes revisited, reworked and internalised rather than expressed in a straight line outward. A retrograde Mercury, for instance, is traditionally read as a season for revising, rereading and reconsidering rather than launching something new. That is a description of emphasis, not a warning: retrograde periods are common, temporary, and not traditionally read as misfortune.
Combust (Asta): Too Close to the Sun

A planet close enough to the Sun disappears from the visible sky long before conjunction — it rises and sets so near the Sun that its own light is lost in the glare. Tradition calls this combustion and reads the planet's expression as dimmed for a while: present in the chart, but harder to see, in the sky and, by extension, in the life the chart describes.
The Classical Combustion Orbs
Combustion is measured as angular separation between a planet's longitude and the Sun's longitude. Each planet has its own traditional orb, inside which it is read as combust. A retrograde inner planet (Mercury or Venus) sits physically between Earth and the Sun, so tradition tightens its orb slightly when retrograde:

The Sun itself is never combust, since combustion is measured from the Sun. Rahu and Ketu are shadow points rather than physical bodies with their own light to lose, so combustion is not traditionally read for them.
Worked Example: A Retrograde, Combust Mercury
Suppose the Sun sits at 20° Virgo and Mercury, moving retrograde, sits at 27° Virgo — a separation of 7°. Because Mercury is retrograde, its combustion orb tightens from 14° to 12°. Seven degrees is inside that 12° orb, so this Mercury reads as both retrograde and combust at once: its usual themes of communication and analysis are read as turned inward by the retrograde and dimmed by the combustion — a double, temporary muting, not a double misfortune.
Common Mistakes About Retrograde and Combust Planets
- Treating retrograde as universally unlucky — it is a direction of apparent motion, not a verdict
- Assuming the Sun or Moon can be retrograde — by definition, neither ever is
- Reading combustion and retrogression as the same condition, when a planet can have either without the other
- Using one flat combustion orb for every planet, when the classical orbs differ meaningfully by planet
- Forgetting that these are temporary transit conditions, not permanent marks on a birth chart's promise
Where Classical Texts Differ
Texts also disagree on how much a retrograde planet's strength actually changes: some hold that a retrograde graha gives fuller results, comparable to being in its own sign, while others read it more cautiously as simply redirected rather than strengthened. Where sources disagree this openly, the honest position is to name the disagreement rather than pick a side and print it as settled fact.
