How Is a Birth Chart Calculated? The Real Astronomy
No mysticism required — just where Earth was pointing, at your first breath.
The short answer
A birth chart is calculated by fixing an exact date, time and place, then computing the geocentric sidereal longitude of the Sun, Moon and planets — their positions as seen from that spot on Earth, measured against the fixed stars. Two motions drive it: Earth's yearly orbit sets each graha's sign, and Earth's daily spin sets the rising sign.
Seen From Where You Actually Stand
Astronomy usually puts the Sun at the centre of the solar system, because that view makes orbital mechanics simplest to calculate. A birth chart does something different, on purpose: it describes the sky as seen from Earth — from the exact town you were born in, at the exact minute. This is called a geocentric view, and it is not a scientific error. Both viewpoints are correct answers to different questions; a birth chart is answering the one a person actually experiences, standing on the ground looking up.
Seen from Earth, the Sun, Moon and every planet travel along one narrow band of sky called the ecliptic — the Sun's own apparent yearly path. Divide that band into twelve equal 30° stretches and you have the twelve signs; at any given moment, every graha stands in front of exactly one of them. Saying 'Mars is in Libra' is not a mystical claim. It is a checkable position, the same one any planetarium software or telescope-pointing app would confirm.

Two Motions Build the Entire Chart
Nearly everything in a Kundali follows from two separate movements of the Earth, and it helps to keep them completely separate in your head. Earth circles the Sun once a year — this is why every graha drifts slowly through the twelve signs over the months. Earth also spins on its own axis once a day — this is why the entire sky, signs included, appears to wheel overhead every twenty-four hours.

That second motion, the daily spin, is the entire reason birth time matters so much for a chart. The rising sign, called the lagna, changes roughly every two hours as Earth turns. Two people born on the same day in the same city will share nearly identical graha positions; if their births are three hours apart, their lagnas differ, every house shifts along with it, and the identical sky ends up being read as two genuinely different charts.

Worked Example: Same City, Same Day, Three Hours Apart
Take two births in the same hospital: one at 6:00am, one at 9:00am. Over those three hours, Earth's spin has carried the eastern horizon through roughly 45° of sky — a season and a half's worth of houses, condensed into one morning. The 6:00am child might rise into Cancer, making Cancer their 1st house and Leo their 2nd, and so on around the wheel. The 9:00am child, three hours later, might rise into Virgo instead, shifting every single house two signs further along. Their Sun and Jupiter positions will be nearly identical; their houses, and everything read from those houses, will not be.
Each Graha Keeps Its Own Pace
How personal a placement feels depends entirely on how fast that graha moves. The slower a graha travels through the zodiac, the more people born around the same time share it — and the more it describes a generation rather than an individual.

This is why Vedic astrology reads the Moon so closely for daily and monthly matters — it is the fastest, most personal clock in the chart. It is also why Saturn's long passages, sade sati among them, are traditionally read as multi-year eras rather than short-term moods: a Moon transit changes within a day, while a Saturn transit can reshape years.
Why Some Grahas Seem to Move Backward
Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn all appear, from time to time, to reverse direction against the stars and drift backward for weeks or months — called retrograde motion. Nothing physically reverses. It is a perspective effect: Earth is also orbiting the Sun, and when a faster inner planet like Earth overtakes a slower outer one, or when Earth and an inner planet round the far side of the Sun at different speeds, the outer or inner body briefly appears to slide backward from our moving vantage point — the same illusion as watching a slower car appear to drift backward as you overtake it on a highway. This is real, measurable astronomy, unrelated to any interpretation of what a retrograde period means.
Where the Astronomy Stops and Tradition Begins
Everything described so far is measurement — positions any observatory would confirm, and the part of a Kundali Astra computes to the arc-minute using the same orbital mechanics as any astronomy software. What a placement means is a different kind of claim entirely: a tradition of interpretation built up over many centuries of classical texts and practice. Is a birth chart based on real astronomy?
Yes. The graha positions in a birth chart are computed the same way any astronomy software computes planetary positions — from orbital mechanics, checkable against an observatory. What differs from plain astronomy is the interpretive layer laid on top of those positions, which is a separate tradition, not a measurement.
Why does birth time matter more than birth date for a chart?
Earth's daily spin moves the rising sign roughly every two hours, while Earth's yearly orbit only shifts the slower grahas' signs over weeks. A birth date that is off by a day barely changes a chart; a birth time that is off by two hours can put an entirely different sign in every house.
